The six-week check has acquired a meaning it was never meant to carry. For a lot of women it functions as a starting gun. Cleared at six weeks, therefore cleared for everything — the class, the run, the weights, whatever you were doing before. But six weeks is a date on a calendar, not an assessment of what your body can currently tolerate. And the tissues involved are working to their own timetable regardless of what the diary says. After a caesarean, the abdominal wall has regained only around half its tensile strength at six weeks, reaching roughly three-quarters to most of it by six or seven months.
